In the town of Abu Simbel, Aswan Governorate, Upper Egypt, close to the Sudanese border, is the historic monument known as Abu Simbel, which consists of two enormous rock-cut temples. About 230 kilometers southwest of Aswan, it is located on the western shore of Lake Nasser. The complex is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the “Nubian Monuments” which include Amada, Wadi es-Sebua, and other Nubian sites, and which extend from Abu Simbel downstream to Philae (close to Aswan).
